I understand that English is your second language, so do you realize I'm not talking about you in the posts above? I'm referring to the guy that wrote that article you copied.
Sorry please carry on I had an extra cup of coffee today.
Hi All,
I'm interested in studying martial arts for self-defence, but I'm a bit concerned about the buddhist and taoist links a lot of martial arts clubs seem to have. Do any of you guys have suggestions about what sort of styles I should look for?

Quote below is from Principles, Theories and Concepts of Chinese Martial Arts by Dr. Sifu Larry Adams
"Being a universal principle, the yin and yang principle should be applied in every aspect of the maritlal arts."
Newton's laws of motion have been verified by experiment and observation for over 200 years.
Newton's third law: law of reciprocal actions
Whenever a particle A exerts a force on another particle B, B simultaneously exerts a force on A with the same magnitude in the opposite direction. The strong form of the law further postulates that these two forces act along the same line. This law is often simplified into the sentence, "To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction."
Another way of saying the same thing: yin and yang.

How to Apply the Concept of Yin and Yang in Martial Arts
Instructions
Considered the origin of life in Chinese philosophy, the concept of yin-yang comprises the conflicting but harmonious nature of a changing universe. The martial artist must be able to combine the soft and the hard (yin and yang) to achieve mastery of the art.
#
Step 1
Begin with meditation to become aware of your own chi, your own internal energy. Becoming aware of chi enables the practitioner to balance energy between yin and yang.
#
Step 2
Meditate every day. After several weeks or months you will begin to sense the rhythm of internal energy without the assistance of deep breathing.
#
Step 3
Seek balance in your martial arts training. Doing too much of a hard technique, such as kicking, without also emphasizing mental or spiritual aspects will lead to an imbalance of energy.
#
Step 4
Look for ways to increase your efficiency in technique and movement. An incorrect application of a technique or any unnecessary movement is also considered too much or too little ' an imbalance of energies.
#
Step 5
Integrate your life through the practice of your art. Integrate your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual selves to work together rather than against one another. [Lisa's note: connecting soul and spirit is the goal of occultists also]
#
Step 6
Strive for balance and understanding in your life. Learn when to yield and when to act (yin-yang) in everyday situations.

integration of body-mind and spirit, the central unification of microcosm and macrocosm, and the consequential development of the whole WoMan which constitutes the perfection of his/her soul."
My ultimate goal, and what I have taught my students over the years, is to srike harder and faster than the other guy. Strike so fast that that you don't even realize that you've done it until it's over and above all stay in the fight. Don't ever quit no matter how bad you're hurt.
There is nothing mystical about any of this. It comes with repitition, more repitiion, and even more repitition. The more you practice and the more you condition your body and mind to prepare for an attack the more prepared you will be when the real thing happens.
I have a warrior mentality. There is nothing zen about it. I fight for a living. I have to be better and more prepared than the other guy. I teach people to carry themselves with confidence and to at all times to be aware of their surroundings. People who do this are not the ones that you read about being victims.
A few words on deep breathing. The purpose of deep breathing is to get more oxygen into the blood and muscles. Further, it also helps to control the heart rate. If the heart beats too fast then ther is a major adrenolin dump into the system. This is the activation of the body's fight or flight system. It supercharges the body for around two minutes. Then there is a great phyiscal let down where the body begins to move in a sluggish fashion and lose co-ordination. The trick is to slow or eliminate this reaction by keeping the heart rate lower. This allows your strength to out last the bad guy's. It's the same technique taught to police officers facing a phyisical or firearm threat.
I can't kill with a shout or a touch. With a spear hand thrust I can penetrate your abdominal wall and hand you whatever I happen to get a hold of while I'm in there. I also know how to shoot you dead with any number of firearms. Just because I know how doesn't mean I'm goung to do it.
I do live by the Bushido Code. That is my choice. I have found it to be compatible with Christianity and it demands better treatment of my fellow man than the xer garbage that I grew up with. The code deals with honor. loyaltiy, chivalry and reverence. We could all benefit from a little more of that. There's nothing mystical or zen about it.
Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in...
I've been doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for a few months and am satisfied with what I am learning...no mysticism - just technique.
I also was an amateur boxer for a while and now I help coach at the boxing ckub. Discipline and hard work is taught and Christian values are preached to the kids every week. I teach a lesson to the club every week on godly character. Anyway, I know a mixture of stand-up (boxing) and ground (jiu jitsu) has given me tools to defend myself if I had to without throwing in any Zen garbage (not to say that the rest of you are involved with Zen).

Has anyone heard of this group? They purport to be a conservative Christian martial arts association.
The Gospel Martial Arts Union exists as an organization to encourage and aid Christian martial arts. To that extent, the GMAU seeks to:
* develop a distinct Christian philosophy of martial arts
* publish, propagate, and set a national (international) standard for true Christian martial arts philosophy
* be a national (international) clearinghouse of the philosophy and standard
* each genuine bible-centered Christian should practice and propagate in their personal experience and in their schools
* be a "Christian" martial arts organization, not an organization for Christians in the martial arts.

Your worrying too much. Ive been doing it forever....
Do Judo or Jui Juitsu. YMCA's and Community Centers also usually have reliable programs.
Only if the practitioner actually practices zen. Otherwise, it is simply a fighting art and science.
Also, karate, being only one of many Japanese styles is simply one of hundreds of different styles of martial arts. Each style around the world has its own history, background, philosophy, and art. To lump any kind of scientific system of fighting techniques as "karate" is yet another example of utter ignorance.
