My second daughter was a projectile vomiter from the time she was a baby until around a year old. She was notorious in the nursery. She totally doused more than one worker. It got to the point that I considered a diaper bag for her and a travel case for me.

I took her to the doctor and he determined that she had a weak sphincter muscle. The muscle above (?) the diaphragm that pushes the food into the stomach and keeps it down there. He gave me a prescription for some very pricey meds which I decided not to pay for since it was almost half a weeks pay. About 2 weeks after that whole thing happened, she stopped doing it. Go figure. She just grew out of it.

I nursed her without problem, well, except the vomiting. She was always a healthy, above average weight. Now my oldest was the one I could not nurse. I stopped at three months with her and have no regrets about it. Life was much easier after that.

thanks for all the kind thoughts and advice.

she is still very urpy but I have seen a pattern to it

I burp her and count to 6 and without fail on 6 she urps a ton. But atleast I can keep it off of me and the clothing, and blankets, and beds, and carpet and the other children. My oldest said yesterday that he is always smelling like urp. Oh well I guess it is just part of living with a baby

I haven't read through all of the responses so this probably all has been said but this is just from my experience...

My kids seemed to have some type of reflux type problem. Some babies do have reflux but I'm sure now that it was only a secondary issue to being sensitive to milk protein(this is not the same thing as an allergy. It's the inability to digest the proteins that are found in milk). To nurse I had to completely give up milk products. Didn't last long with #2 and #3 because I didn't get that I had to give up anything that had any milk in it at all. To do formula it had to be Alimentum and for #3 an amino acid based formula I got out of the pharmacy through RX.

More determined with #4 and was successful with nursing but I had to be willing to stick with that milk free diet (includes things like casein and whey and frankly milk is just in about everything).

My suggestion if you want to continue nursing is to start the milk free diet and remember it can take like 2 weeks to get it out of you and your babies system. If that does not work talk to your pediatrician about reflux. If you feel you have to do formula you may want to look into something like nutramigen or alimentum. It is expensive but breaks down those proteins so they are easier to digest. And it really stinks.

And some kids just spit up period. #3 continued to projectile vomit until he was 9 months old...even on the rx formula that agreed with his tummy.

Sorry baby is so sick. Our son, as a newborn baby began loosing weight to where the Doctor was very concerned. Spitting up everything, I was constantly burping him due to his upset stomach. Allergies to all formulas, incl. soy and goats milk. My wife went back to work part time @ 6 weeks but came home for lunch. I stayed home with our baby p/t, working at night and some days when she was home. Breast feeding wasn't an option, she tried.

Eventually I realized he wanted my food.

So at about 6 wks, he ate what I ate. Continued from then on, problem fixed. He fell asleep immediately for two whole hours and didn't cringe up like he had an upset stomach from formula. I still offered formula at every other meal which meant, the poor thing had tummy aches at every other meal but Doc said he needed the formula. I wouldn't do that now

He ate my crushed up organic pears, organic oatmeal (very crushed up of course) and some other things I would make like pea soup and brown rice (complete protein btw). Cooked organic carrotts were a favorite, all mashed up. I never added sour cream or toxic additives anyway, avoided all salts, eating very bland organic whole foods. Sometimes we ate earths best organic baby food when I was too lazy to cook for us, the peas and brown rice is fairly edible.

Breastfeeding means they are eating what you are eating, so if you are eating processed foods with chemicals (anything which is not labeled organic) toxins, poisons, then baby is eating it too. 90% of the food in the grocery stores is bad for you, filled to the hilt with drugs. Formula was too, and some of gerber baby food but I think they changed it, not sure. Maybe not

He would get a red butt from eating or drinking apple cider, allergic to apples. Allergy shots were a must for a few years, and he still has allergies to some degree. He is 18, has strong bones, works out regularly and is in great health otherwise. Maybe feed your baby some real food, but ensure it is organic and google to ensure it isn't something he is likely to be allergic to. This takes much time, hard to do with a swarm of other kids to take care of. So to be safe, shopping at health food stores only for a while is the easiest option. Whole Foods Market and our local health food stores do not generally carry items with toxic drugs, and all veges are organic. Hope the baby gets better soon
