So, anyone have any experience/knowledge as to which is better for a church parking lot? How about costs/size of the project with which you have a knowledge?

I was a project engineer for PPG Industries, ARCO Chemical CO., and Hon Industries for many years and put in a lot of buildings, roads, and parking lots, etc.

That a tough question to answer because it depends a lot on:
    1) soil conditions, and
    2) loads that you expect on it.

The best thing to do is ask a professional engineer at a local arcitectural firm who is familair with the area's geological conditions. He/she could probably give you a general idea which direction to go.

Generally speaking for typical church traffic, asphalt is acceptable, and is much less expensive than concrete. But be sure to address the first two items I mentioned above first.

All other things being equal, I expect asphalt to be less expensive, but it won't last as long as concrete, so in the long run, concrete may be more cost-effective.
