You do not choose your secular profession based upon a "calling" from God. If you choose a profession based upon gifts given by God that's one thing.
And what do you expect an 18 year old high school graduate to do with this nugget of wisdom from you?
In my experience, a man who meets a high school senior's future plans with your especial brand of blunt instrument is a jerk--whatever position that man holds in the world. A guidance counselor who ridicules a young person's earnest desires is a failure.
It saddens me to realise just how much of a failure you are as a counselor for young people. I hope the kids in your church have someone else to talk to about these things.

its crazy how I was sitting in the supreme court of SC on a field trip in my senior year of high school and felt God "calling" me to be an attorney...and its crazy how he has opened the doors all the way along to make that calling possible!

You are the epitome of everything that is wrong with Christianity. You don't give two craps about your congregration. You don't give a crap about Christ. You don't give a crap about reaching the lost. As long as you are lifted up is all that matters to you. You are nothing in the eyes of God. Nothing at all. Ok, maybe I'm missing something here, but it appears that you have an issue with Hyper-IFB that goes beyond the topic of the OP.
This response goes way beyond the pale for a child of God to address another. To say that this response illustrates everything that is wrong with Christianity, to say this response means he doesn't care for [I'll not use your language] for his congregation, to say he doesn't care anything at all for the lost, to say that God doesn't care for him more than a sparrow that falls (Matt 6:26), is hurtful to the name and cause of Christ.
So, if we can set aside personal animus, can you Scripturally address the point Hyper was trying to make? Other than the call to salvation and the call to service, what "call" of God is in Scripture? And, because I too agree with Hyper's statements about the "call" of God, does that make me as worthless in your eyes as he?
Now, in actual answer to the OP, I would clarify by saying that I believe God leads every Christian who has a desire to follow the will of God for their life. If a young person is desirous of a career that cannot be pursued in a Christian college, and if that desire is not one that would be displeasing to the Lord, then by all means, pursue it!
However, if that career choice has training available from a Christian college, I encourage the young person to prayerfully consider it.
We thank God for every one of our young people who are living for Christ, and grieve for every one who walks away from serving Christ.
Our weekly church prayer list gives the names of all our out-of-town college students and military personnel. Several are in various Bible colleges. Several in tech schools. Several in public universities (one is even pursuing a chemistry degree... and we have said publicly that we pray he doesn't blow anything up! ). Several are serving in our armed forces. A couple are in police academies. And, many of the most faithful servants in our ministry are young people who have stayed here and are working factory jobs, retail jobs, customer service jobs, etc. We thank God for all of them, and encourage them to find their place in God's will for their lives by living for Him one day at a time.
