a young person in your congregation comes to you and tells you that God has called him to be a chemist and he is going to the local public university, what would you say to him?

That's it? That's your advice for this hypothetical college-bound young person? Come on, man, you must have something else to offer.

And let our's also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.
Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.
God's callings aren't reserved for being a dolt like you.
Let me repeat, you are an idiot.
1 Corinthians 7:20 Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.
Oh noes! I'm stuck being a first grader! Well I guess that at least gives me an excuse to be childish. I pity the abortionist and prostitute that get saved, though.

So, when a "non-called" chemist one day discovers the cure for some awful disease like polio (oh wait, already happened) or maybe cancer, then we will not say that person was called of God to do what they did?!? I agree with what was said above, you sir, are an idiot!!!

Mankind is called unto salvation and men are called to preach the gospel. That's it.
You do not choose your secular profession based upon a "calling" from God. If you choose a profession based upon gifts given by God that's one thing.

The Biblical teaching on the sovereignty of God is summed up well by the Westminister Confession of faith: "God from all eternity did, by the most wise and holy counsel of His own will, freely and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass.

I would ask him if he has considered any of the Christian Universities that have had graduates accepted at nationally known universities for their post graduate work?
I would ask if they have prayed about it.
I would ask what he will do to continue to grow in the Lord and how will they deal with the unique temptations a Christian faces at a state college.
I would ask if he wants a list of churches in that area that are similar to ours.
I'll kiss them good by because they will only come back to a podunk town like ours on vacation. Brain drain.

Tit 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

hahaha...okay, God doesn't direct anyone else's lives?! Too bad I don't want to be a preacher! I'm just lost with my gifts and have no direction or calling in my life. I just get to pick what I want to do and God couldnt care less...::note sarcasm:::
its crazy how I was sitting in the supreme court of SC on a field trip in my senior year of high school and felt God "calling" me to be an attorney...and its crazy how he has opened the doors all the way along to make that calling possible!
Still standing on the fact that you, sir, are an idiot! (and clearly know nothing about the Sovereignty of God!)
