Another thing that concerns me is when pastors encourage their members to to stand up and shake hands over and over right in the middle of cold and flu season. I wish all would use some common sense.
I personally wish that:
- Sick people would stay home and not spread their illnesses to those who may not be able to fight off bugs very well.
- What Merlin's quote says.
I have a Hubby who already has been hospitalized this year from a bug he couldn't fight off.

Agreed!

Our church has actually given up the customary "holy handshake" and encouraged sick people to stay home and listen to the sermon on the podcast - and Purell stations have grown up like weeds. No one's really worried about serious illness, though, that I can see.

Of course, if I was visiting some of the churches here I might miss the pastor's fist . . .
Our church recently announced that during our "handshake time" we will temporarily replace it with some other fellowship ritual(s), and the first time we did it I *did* suggest that we either do fist pound or chest bumps (men on men, and ladies on ladies of course ).

That is also why, when I was a Catholic, I passed on the shared cup.
I wonder whether the common cup was a serious source of germs prior to the widespread use of grape juice for communion? The few times I've taken communion when real wine was used, it was surprisingly strong - more than any table wine I've had.

The chest bumps and fist pounds would fit nicely with the grunting going on at Hyper's Church.

We have done the same thing, and I'm laughing about the chest bump thing...my ushers taking the morning offering tried to do it in lieu of shaking hands.
