A well-known ifbXX Christian School that has long stood AGAINST any sports for the girls except cheerleading has recently stated it will no longer have cheerleading for their girls either.
Thinking back to when I pastored and was admin of our Christian School and we had girls' sports (VB, BB, Track, Softball as many of our Christian colleges have). We had to have carefully structured dress codes for sports and cheerleading and it was a line clearly apart from what the world was doing.
Would like a discussion on MODEST cheerleading (nice outfits, knee length, not doing the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader sexual gyrations and immodesty - let's make sure we all understand that) in our Christian Schools and/or our girls cheerleading or playing sports in high school or college in general.
Some might have more free time with a long weekend and I'd really an intelligent discussion.

Cheerleading is great, and can be very challenging if you work at it. Gymnastics comes in handy!
That said, I'm a bit iffy on it. It might be helpful if a school was capable of teaching cheerleaders how to do so without the sexual moves and such, but that's kinda the point of cheerleading and really isn't a separate issue. You get physically fit, pretty girls out there that can bend and twist and shake and get the crowd going. There are certain moves cheerleaders learn and ways of holding your body. Very often, you learn a few dances for rallies or at the end of big games. I've never seen cheerleaders dancing to "How Great Thou Art".
I've never seen a Christian school take a cheerleading group and do anything awesome with them. Usually they just provide them with clothes that cover them decent and they grab some pom-poms and do a few lame jumps and such. Nothing to really consider a sport. The line drawn isn't one of change, it's just the same stuff as the world, but severely repressed.
It would really have to be reinvented in order to be ok in a Christian school. Instead of toning down regular stuff, why not take it and focus on the gymnastics/leadership aspects of it? I don't know of any Christian school that does this, but they may be out there. If so, good for them. I'd like to see it.
Yeap quit all that worldliness, that is why a lot of colleges like OBC is putting treadmills and stationary bikes in the girls dorms so some of the girls can fit through the door without turning side ways If they have no exercise programs they won't be able to maintain a healthy life style. For some reason they stop the womens programs or never start them, and then expect them to just stay skinny on faith. WHat a mess.

Cheerleading has gone through quite an evolution over the last few decades, going from being cheer leaders to being performers. Instead of leading the fans in cheers, they have become groups that simply perform for the fans. The emphasis has shifted from let's-cheer-on-our-team to look-at-what-I-can-do.
Can and should Christian schools have cheerleaders? Of course. Should Christian schools sponsor women's sports? Of course, again. Girls should be given the same opportunities as boys.

I harken back to my freshman year of H.S. football getting beat 42-7, cheerleaders on the sideline cheering with, "We are No. 1, we can't be beat!".
I got one too. 4th and 29 (don't ask) lining up to punt and the cheerleaders are doing "wewantatouchdowngottahaveatouchdown".
It would help if the girls had a clue what was going on or how the game works.
As to the modesty issue; in this "enlightened age" I am surprised that the world doesn't see (or the ones that do don't mind) the eye candy side of cheer. Mom, the men are lusting over your daughter shaking her groove thing. Dad, stop lusting over the other daughters, your's is a target too.
The exuberance, optimism and good attitude found in most cheerleaders is good. Too bad that gets lost in the rest.

I agree that many of the moves are sexually suggestive, but lusting after underage girls? What kind of pervert gets aroused by under-aged girls. I think the bigger concern would be how the cheerleader's suggestiveness is affecting the under-aged boys.

I find it troubling that you have only talked about the antics of the "cowgirls".....what about the Saints cheerleaders....or the JAGUARS? No....that is awefully narrowminded of you
