Something new apparently.

I was watching the movie "Rockne" (famous Notre Dame football coach) recently and noticed that the movie borrows from original footage of football games played back in the day. I had never before noticed how similar the old way of playing resembles the way rugby is played today, with a lot of laterals thrown during a single play. I wonder why modern-day U.S. football isn't still played that way? It is much more exciting.
