BTW, I've known Marilyn Godfrey for 25 years next month. I go to hear her husband preach whenever they're in this area, and she & I catch up on who is where and what everyone's doing now. Not one time (in public or private) has Bro. Godfrey said anything negative to me (or those who came to hear him preach) about HAC, FBCH or Jack Hyles.

You know as well as I do that there were kids at the college when we were both there that were "soured" on the college....and George Godfrey was long gone.

BTW, it's not the college I'm "sour" on....its the repeated coverups of known wrongs and folks who were willing to sacrifice their kids (and often times entire families) for the sake of the ministry.

    Justmama,

We agree on many things and we disagree on a few. The Godfreys are one where we disagree.

The point about people souring on the college who were around the Godfrey's is a general statement. It seems that those who were in their circle at HAC turned sour on the college.

I haven't heard the man preach since the infamous family service in chapel years ago, so I don't know about him today. His classes were terrible, very suggestive and his illustrations were raunchy. He did tear down the college in class. I wish I had waited and taken his classes later when Larry Smith taught them.

I do respect you and will take your word that the Godfrey's do not bad mouth HAC today.

Clarksville, could you elaborate on your statement that he "tore down the college in class"? Please tell me that you aren't referring to an absence of blind, puppy-dog loyalty to all things Hyles or Anderson.

If you had taken Personal Evangelism later, you could have learned the art of "soul-tricking"...!

I had George Godfrey and never had that - please elaborate.
We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.

    Thoughts on Godfrey...

I had him 8AM Monday mornings my first semester. WOW! As far as him not using trickery... I still have the Jesus and Devil face cards from Personal Evangelism. When presenting the gospel if your prospect rejected it... you held up the Jesus card in their face and said "You realize you are saying NO to Jesus. In saying NO to Jesus you are saying YES to the Devil (hold up the Devil card)."

He also taught, I still have the notes, NEVER answer a prospects question. Simply respond, "That's an excellent question and I will answer in just a moment." Then once they pray and get saved they will forget the question.

I still have a book in my library of Godfrey's Greatest Soul Winning Tricks.

First time I heard him preach in chapel I had a chapel date. During his message he made the statement, "My wife has never denied me sex." Great. What a trooper. Then he said something about the married women should never deny their husbands or they would fall into sin.

I think if you'll check that one out, Marty, it comes right out of "Let's Go Soulwinning" by JH. It's in the part about not getting sidetracked.

BTW, sorry about your chapel date . I was in the infirmary that day and was never so glad to have missed a chapel sermon in all my life.

Not all. But many were "sour" on many things HAC/FBCH before the great exodus began. One person's leaving (at that time) often gave another one the "boost" they needed (or felt they needed) to do the same.

They weren't the most inspirrational classes, I'll grant you that....especially at 8am M-T. (Where's the sleeping smilie guy???) But I never heard him tear down FBCH, Preacher, or HAC (and I got the opportunity to take his class more than once) .

I had Smith for the class and was implying that it was one of the items that I remembered from his version of Personal Evangelism.

That's not Brother Godfreys style. He's a very gracious, Godly man. My mother is a close friend of Bro. and Sis Godfrey.

    Marty,

I remember that day in chapel!!!!!!!!!!! That was so funny! You and I laughed about that forever. Bro Godfrey is still my favorite HAC person to immitate.

Remember this?: Staring out the window "In case you are wondering what I am doing - I am loooooooking for the Lord to return! Because the Bible says that the Lord will return at a time when men think not -- and, young man, you are not thinking!!!!!!!!!"
