Quote:
Recently a young lady was expelled from Hyles-Anderson College. Shortly after this expulsion, I was in her home church preaching for two days. I asked her father if he and his daughter would have lunch with me on Tuesday. The young lady was not treated like a criminal. She was treated with dignity and propriety. Toward the end of the conversation I told her that there was a possibility that we too had made some mistakes. I asked her to tell me frankly of any area in our college where she thought we could improve and where students could be treated with more justice, propriety and discernment. Though she was reluctant to do so, upon my insistence, she did. Her suggestions were helpful, ans some of them are being implemented at this time at Hyles-Anderson College. Our conversation was a help to me and a help to her.
If you would have been asked this question while in school, what would have been your answer? What would you have suggested?

I think a lot of the issues at the college under Dr. Hyles came from the great amount of autonomy granted to the second tier of leaders. People like Wendell Evans and his vice presidents were generally bright enough and restrained enough to not go off the reservation without being watched 24/7. However, there were some staff underneath them and in the faculty that had too much ego or not enough sense to figure out either the boundaries of their position or the party line.

I would have told Teri that she was a rebel and she would never do anything worthwhile with her life!

I think that during my time in classes & sometimes in chapel there, I wasted a lot of time writing letters & listening to rants about teachers personal preferences & causes instead of spending time learning to rightly divide the Word of truth.
And I would have told Teri, that was a noble way of getting lunch with Bro. Hyles.
You are always looking on the positive side!
