Understanding a Partial Rapture
Two days ago, in another thread, the topic of a partial rapture came up. I am starting this thread to address the question that arose in that thread. BobH seemed to be of the opinion that the rapture was inextricably linked to salvation.
Why would missing the rapture mean you were not saved? Would that mean that all the saints who had died before the rapture were not saved? Bob responded with a passage of scripture:

Now, we didn't have time to clarify terms in that thread, because I had to leave. I should make it clear that when I speak of a partial rapture, I'm talking about a pre-trib rapture. I don't see anything in that passage that speaks to the timing of the event, other than 'unto the coming of the Lord'. I'm perfectly allright with this passage speaking of a total rapture at the end of the tribulation when the Lord comes back. All Christians are going to be gathered to stand before the judgment seat of Christ. We which are alive and remain, that is to say have not been killed and have not been removed by God already, will then be caught up.
"But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
Wherefore comfort one another with these words."
So where do we get an understanding of a partial pre-trib rapture? From verses like Luke 21:36
Luke 21:36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
All these things that shall come to pass, he is speaking of the tribulation. To be able to escape all these things, one must be accounted worthy. Here is another one.
10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
We see that being kept from the hour of temptation was caused by the keeping of the word of His patience.
