Reading the BJU chapel synopsis from the other day. Mark Minnick was preaching and made the following statement:
"There are things in the Bible that are unlawful and that are strictly forbidden – fornication, divorce, or a woman publicly instructing men in doctrine."
Just some random musings about each.
First, why are these three lumped together?
Second, is divorce "forbidden?" If so, why did God provide an "out." Forbidden is a pretty definitive term.
Third, "women publicly instructing men in doctrine?" What's that got to do with the other two?
Yes, I understand how they are treated in scripture, I just find this an odd combination of "sins."
As per the OP, random examples to illustrate that there are some things for which interpretation or debate are not necessary. Nothing to be read into there.
"random examples to illustrate that there are some things for which interpretation or debate are not necessary"
Two of the three I see no debate, divorce however, is given an out. Not that God wants it, but there is a "BUT" in the case of divorce. Therefore it is not "forbidden."
Not that I'm for it or agin' it just not as clear as the other two.
Depends on how you interpret the divorce thing. There are good men who say there is a "but," and there are good men who say there is no "but." Even before reading the above post, I would have figured that he would be a "no but" kind of guy.
A lot of things are forbidden in the Bible, but that doesn't mean they don't happen. There are a lot of people who think divorce is one of those things. They will say that while Moses permitted divorce in the case of adultery, and that Jesus referred to that, the fact that Moses permitted it doesn't make it right to God.
Whether divorce is forbidden or not, the reality is that we have to deal with it--as we have to deal with the effects of countless other sins--in our churches because it happens. With the increasing divorce rate among Christians, I would assume he was making the point that you need to be very careful about choosing whom you will marry in order to avoid divorce and its results.

You gotta be a lawyer, dwelling on the most minute details of that which had nothing to do with the chapel messages.
The point of the message was that there are some things that Scripture says are wrong, but they are not what the discussion was to be about. To note that he included divorce as an example of that list, which Scripture does clearly say is wrong (Matt. 5), and make that the major point simply because, unlike other things, Scripture includes a specific, narrow exception, borders on dis-ingenuity.
My attention to detail is a result of the education I received at BJU. Words mean things and nothing is published or spoken by BJU without attention to the words and their meanings.
There is a pretty comprehensive list of 10 items in the Book of Exodus. Just thought it curious the three he chose.

You really think Jr. always put his brain in gear before his mouth was in motion?
I happened to be there for both messages. Sitting beside Anchor for one of them in fact. You would have to ask Minnick why he picked those examples. I believe he wanted something that was not specifically mentioned in the 10 commandments but scripture commented on elsewhere.

Tit 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

Well, he was always highly entertaining. One day he got on a rant about men dancing ballet and prancing about in tights. He called them fags I believe. I was a bit shocked, it was early on in the school year. One of the girls on my floor was in tears--she wanted to be a ballerina. We thought it was funny. Oh well . . .
