I found it!! I was helping my daughter with a Home Ec. project and came across it stuck in a book I hadn't used in years!! Here it is:

    Coffee Kuchen (BJU)

    3 c sifted flour
    3 t baking powder
    1/4 t salt
    1 1/4 t cinnamon
    1 c sugar
    1 c light brown sugar
    3 T instant coffee
    1/2 c butter or margarine
    1/2 c shortening
    1 c milk
    1/8 t baking soda
    2 eggs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease and flour a 13 x 9 pan. Into a large bowl, sift flour with baking powder, salt, cinnamon, sugars, and coffee. Using pastry blender (or 2 knives) cut butter and shortening into flour mixture until it is small pea-size. Set aside 1 cup for topping. Combine milk with baking soda and eggs. Mix well with wooden spoon. Stir all at once into flour mixture until just combined. Turn into prepared pan. Sprinkle evenly with rest of flour/shortening mixture. Bake 50-60 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Serve warm.

Ugh - I should have known that. I am of German descent (as some ancestor turns in their grave).

I'll save that one my wife. I'm no good at cakes or deserts. I the meat and potatoes maker!

    Default Cookbook

Sad to say, the bookstore did not have any copies of the DC cookbook. My wife even had them look it up in the system.

I may have another source that I can check...but that will be when we get back home tommorrow evening.

    Oh....it is gorgeous down here!

    THE REAL COFFEE KUCHEN RECIPE

    Coffee Kuchen (BJU)

    1 c sifted flour
    3 t baking powder
    1/4 t salt
    1 1/4 t cinnamon
    2 lb sugar
    5 lb light brown sugar
    3 T instant coffee
    1/2 c butter or margarine
    1/2 c shortening
    1 c milk
    1/8 t baking soda
    2 eggs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease and flour a 13 x 9 pan. Dust it liberally with more sugar. Into a large bowl or galvinized steel bucket, sift flour with baking powder, salt, cinnamon, sugars, and coffee.

If you run low on the eggs, instant coffee, baking powder, or salt, add more white sugar. Calculate 1/2 lb per tablespoon in substitution. If you run out of white sugar and have to substitute in brown sugar, calculate 1.5 lbs per tablespoon substitition.

Using pastry blender (or 2 knives) cut butter and shortening into flour mixture until it is small pea-size. Set aside 1 cup for topping. Dust everything with more sugar.

Combine milk with baking soda and eggs. If mix is too watery, add sugar.

Mix well with wooden spoon. Stir all at once into flour mixture until just combined. Turn into prepared pan, the size of a tabletop. Sprinkle evenly with rest of flour/shortening mixture. Take a five pound bag of brown sugar, start at the top left corner, and drizzle brown sugar over everything, working in even rows, until you have emptied the bag.

Bake 50-60 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Serve warm. If not sweet enough, spoon sugar on top fresh out of the oven.

best enjoyed with little chips of oleo on top, and more sugar.
