View Full Version : Wedding Songs
Ma Lin 03-09-2007, 12:59 PM I'm trying to find some good wedding songs. Our 22 year-old son is planning to get married this spring, and I'd like to be able to suggest a song or two that would have the right message for my son and his new bride as they begin this journey together.
What I'm asking the forum faithful to do is to help me with some ideas. What are some songs that you had at your wedding? Or, what are some songs that you think would be good?
When Jim and I got married, I had only been saved about a year and I was pretty clueless so our pianist picked out some songs for us. Jim chose to sing, "We Believe In a Hill Called Mount Calvary" and we changed some of the words.
Did any of you change the words to songs you already knew or did you find a song that said just what you wanted it to say?
I would appreciate all the help I can get as I enter into this brand new phase of life. It is strange to think that I will be a mother-in-law soon. I'll need tips on that, too :)
FundamentalDan 03-10-2007, 04:23 PM At my wedding, they sang a song that I wrote for my wife. They also sang a song called "Lord, Bless Our Home".
I do not remember the words to the one. But the song I wrote went like this:
From the moment that I met you, I prayed that it could be-
That God would grant my heart's desire and give your heart to me.
I watched you as you lived your faith, showed a witness that was true.
It did not take much time at all to know that I love you.
Chorus: I love you more than I can say, I love you more each passing day.
More than I imagined; more than I could dream. I love you more than I could know. Every day it seems to grow. Each moment that we trod this earth below, I know I'll love you more.
Now we stand here at this altar, promising our faithful love.
Asking God to build our home to reflect His home above.
We vow to make our family a foundation from God's Word.
Then together we can through our faith proclaim to Christ our Lord-
We love you more than we can say, We love you more each passing day.
Because You gave your life for us and took our sins away.
We love you more than we can show. Every day it seems to grow. Each moment that we trod this earth below, we know we'll love you more.
To be honest, it was the first song I have ever written, and it turned out fairly well. It was special to us, because I wrote it for her.
Other than that, I cannot give any other suggestions. But, I pray that God will bless you all as your son prepares for marriage. It is hard to believe he is even old enough for that.
Ma Lin 03-10-2007, 06:17 PM Daniel, your song is beautiful. Your wife must have felt so special to know that you wrote those words for her. What is the tune? Did you write the music as well?
I like the way it starts out with a prayer for God to allow the two of you to get married and ends with a pledge to build your home on God's Word, and to love the LORD for the rest of your lives. It is a perfect wedding song.
As I read over the words it brought to mind a song Jim and I heard when we were dating. It was never popular, and we only heard it on the radio a few times. It was called something like "You're Number Two". I haven't heard it since we got married and I've tried to Google it to see who sang it and what the words were, but have come up empty. I guess no one else liked it as much as we did. It said exactly what we felt for one another. This is all we remember of the song:
I'll sing you a love song that's one of a kind,
It's not a typical love song, 'cause it's one of mine.
When I say I love you, you know that it's true,
Even though you're number two.
Chorus: It's not that I love you less than best,
For each day I love you more, and more, and more.
But there can only be one first place in my life,
And you know Who that's for, (my LORD).
I know that Jesus is number one in my life,
So second place will have to do for you.
And I'm counting on spending the rest of my life,
In love with the two of you.
Now don't be down hearted and think I don't love you
I'd expect the same commitment from you
I'd be broken hearted if I were to find out that
I was not your number two.
It is such a corny little song but we're corny enough to love it, so it is our song.
Thanks for sharing your song FD.
FundamentalDan 03-10-2007, 08:03 PM I guess you could say I wrote the music. I actually had the tune and words pop into my head. But, since I cannot read music, one of the ladies of our church who can play by ear played it and then wrote down what notes it was. So, I wrote the words and the tune, but she wrote the notes.
I like your song too. That is kind of what I was trying to express. God brought us together so that together we would serve Him. If that is corny, I guess I am just corny too!! God bless you on the wedding. Is it going to be in China or here in the states?
Ebenezer 03-10-2007, 08:50 PM The most beautiful wedding song that I ever heard at a wedding is "How Beautiful" by Twilla Parris.
Ivan Lambert 03-10-2007, 09:19 PM Trying to think....
of the songs I recall off of the top of my head that I have heard used in my years...
Household of Faith
I Will Be Here
Cherish the Treasure
The Lord's Prayer
The Wedding
Butterfly Kisses
Friends
Till the End of Time
That should get you started; some decidedly Christian lyrics in these.

I've never heard of it. I will try a Google search for the words.
Thanks.

Ma Lin 03-10-2007, 09:37 PM God bless you on the wedding. Is it going to be in China or here in the states?
Thanks.
It's going to be here in the States before we go back in June. It looks like we're going to have a busy next few months ahead of us. :)
At our wedding we had "Only God could Love you More than I do". We had one more song but I can't remember what it was right now. I will have to get back to you on that.
Ma Lin 03-11-2007, 05:48 PM Thanks, Okie. I Googled the lyrics and I really like these words. I will try to find the music and see what I think. Do you know who sings it?
ONLY GOD COULD LOVE YOU MORE
I asked the Lord for someone,
and I always knew that in God's time and in God's way
it would be someone like you.
All my hopes and all my dreams
were suddenly fulfilled
It's almost unbelievable
our love is in his will.
Only God could love you more,
for he gave me this love I have for you.
What a blessing to know He's your Lord,
For only God could love you more, than I do.
I'm tempted to be saying ,
that we met by chance
But God was there at every turn,
In every circumstance
To share this life God gave me
seems such a fearful task,
But every moment we have shared
is more than I could ask

I sang this to my future wife at our wedding....
She was waiting at the back of the auditorium with her Dad....
I looked up, took the breath to start....
and....
couldn't breath....
I made it until the last phrase....
She was ssssoooooo beautiful......
(and is even more so today....)
Ma Lin 03-11-2007, 09:27 PM I love stories like that! How romantic. To think of your love for your wife on that day, and even now after all these years, it would seem that you chose the perfect song.
How long have you been married, if you don't mind my asking?

southern belle 03-12-2007, 10:55 AM Only Little Girl - Steve and Annie Chapman - daddy's girl
I loved Her First (Heartland) - daddy's girl
Only God Could Love You More
When I say I Love you, I mean Forever
The Way you Look tonight ??? some might not like it, but I had a friend that had this sung as a recessional
The Parents Prayer - maybe as the parents come out and light the unity candle or something????
Butterfly Kisses - daddy's girl
I would do a google search too. I was shocked by the vast number of good love songs.
Ma Lin 03-12-2007, 02:47 PM The Parents Prayer - maybe as the parents come out and light the unity candle or something????
I Googled the words to The Parent's Prayer:
I guess we have always known
That a day like this one would come
When our children would leave us
And begin to build a home of their own
Lord, all you have taught us
We have gladly passed on to them
But one thing we don't know
Is how to place them back in your arms again
CHORUS:
Lord, help us let go of two
That they might become one
Just like the Father, Spirit, and Son
Two hearts invisibly bound in love
By a vow that will not be undone
Now in your tender care
Lord, be all that we cannot be
And help us to trust you
When we don't see you quickly meeting their needs
For you have provided
Since the day you gave our children to us
But now, in your arms dear Jesus
The time has come for giving them up
Repeat CHORUS
The urge is strong
To try holding on
To the image of two
The way that we knew them
But now in your eyes
The two will be as one
Repeat CHORUS 2 times
TAG:
By a vow that will not be undone
By a vow that will not be undone
Those words are beautiful.
I didn't know that the parents were supposed to light the unity candle. At our wedding Jim and I lit the unity candle together. We blew out the candles we were holding. I was wearing the veil over my face, and when I blew, the veil was between me and the candle and my candle wouldn't go out. However, the veil was blown forward and nearly touched the flame. Everyone gasped. I held the candle toward Jim and he blew it out for me. Everyone laughed. That was a bad way of doing things. I've since heard that you don't need to blow out the candles after you light the unity candle. I like the idea of the parents doing it. Is it supposed to be both sets of parents?
Thanks for your help.

Our parents lit our candles, then we lit the unity candle and blew out our own ones.
Ivan Lambert 03-12-2007, 10:01 PM the bottom line is what is symbolized.
The remaining candle left burning symbolizes the two [bride and groom] becoming one flesh; their allegiance is now to each other, not mom and dad.
They are leaving Father and mother and cleaving to their mate.
Would that more newlyweds remembered this...
Come to think of it, would that more meddling parents acknowledged this as well!
I had some problems with my computer so I am just now able to post again. I thought you might like to know that I have the sheet music for "Only God Could Love You More". Also to the song "Yours Forever" by Ron and Shelly Hamilton. I will send you a private message.
OKIE
Ma Lin 03-13-2007, 10:22 AM Thanks, Okie. I got your PM and responded to you before I read your post. I would be interested in "Yours Forever" also. I love that song and I haven't thought of it in years. I remember the first time I heard it we were living in China and I listened to it over and over for hours. I remember thinking it would be a beautiful wedding song.
Thank you so much!
God bless you,

Thanks, Ivan. It helps to know the added significance of the parents part in the unity candle lighting exercise.
God bless you
southern belle 03-13-2007, 11:16 AM Typically when I have seen an unity candle (I didn't have one), the mothers light the individual candle then at some point later the bride and groom light the unity together.
Have you seen a "sand ceremony"? It is similar in idea to a candle, only you pour two colors of sand in a clear glass container. You can start off with the sand just sitting there or have the mothers pour some sand in the bottom and then the bride and groom later. I think it is prettier than it sounds, plus you can pick a glass container with a lid and have it for a momentum from the wedding.
The song, "The Father Says I Do" is a pretty one.
So is, "Her Mother and I"
Cathy Corle has the album, "Family Love Notes" which has some pretty songs and of course the ones by Ron Hamilton.
A video/slideshow presentation is nice to show, especially after the grandparents and parents are seated. People like to see the baby pics, the growing up pics and then if you have "dating" pics. It is nice.
Ma Lin 03-13-2007, 09:39 PM Thanks Southern Belle, those are some wonderful ideas.
I appreciate so much everyone's imput on this thread.
I found a website where I can get the music for Ron and Sherrie Hamilton's "Yours Forever", and I found a website where I can purchase Cathe Corle's songs.
We could use your prayers. So far everything is going so smoothly that I could almost say that I was actually enjoying the process were it not for my overactive nerves :(
Marji 03-14-2007, 08:14 AM Our daughter, Micah, was married 1 1/2 years ago. She sang a song at her wedding that had everyone in tears. It was beautiful.
Here's the lyrics for the new AWESOME duet with Natalie Grant and Michael O'Brien of Newsong! Make sure and check it out! You'll love it!
Its always been a mystery to me
How two hearts can come together
And love can last forever
But now that I have found you, I believe
That a miracle has come
When God sends the perfect one
Now gone are all my questions about why
And Ive never been so sure of anything in my life
(Chorus)
I wonder what God was thinking
When He created you
I wonder if He knew everything I would need
Because He made all my dreams come true
When God made you
He must have been thinking about me
(Verse 2)
I promise that wherever you may go
Wherever life may lead you
With all my heart Ill be there too
From this moment I want you to know
Ill let nothing come between us
And I will love the ones you love
Now gone are all my question about why
And Ive never been so sure of anything in my life
(Repeat Chorus)
(Bridge)
He made the sun He made the moon
To harmonize in perfect tune
One cant move without the other
They just have to be together
And that is why I know its true
Youre for me and Im for you
Cause my world just cant be right
Without you in my life
(Repeat Chorus)
(Tag)
He mustve heard every prayer Ive been praying
Yes He knew everything I would need
When God made you
When dreams come true
When God made you
He mustve been thinking about me
Blessings on being a new mil. You'll do great, I'm sure!
Ma Lin 03-14-2007, 09:05 AM Marji, that song is perfect.
Thank you. Those words are absolutely perfect for Isaac and Cindy. I've never seen two people more made for one another than they are.
(I had tears streaming down my face while I read those words. Now I'll have to go clean up before my dentist appointment that I am almost late to. :o )
