Didn't Paul spend "certain days" with Ananias and the disciples at Damascus before he preached the Gospel in the Synangogue? And then spent time in Arabia before going to the church in Jerusalem?
Also, doesn't Paul train Timothy and Titus etc. while he travels? This training cannot be completely associated with one local church but to an individual.
Although I completely agree with you that our local churches should do a better job in training men for the ministry and I wish many of our older pastors would take younger men under their wings, I do not know that we can conclude that the local church is the only place of training for the ministry.
Well said.

You make some very good points, although I think you misunderstood me in a few places. I will take full responsibility for that, since I wrote it!
I can see the place for a Christian liberal arts school, I was referring to Bible Colleges, and Seminaries. The ideal is that churches would teach and train in theology, and there would not be a need for schools that are outside of the church to exist.
AS far as children, the main responsibility to teach and train them in doctrine, belongs to the parents. (another area that we as churches fall short, we teach parents to bring the children to the "professionals" for spiritual training, instead of equiping the parents to train their own children)
Deut 6:4-9
"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

This is one of the parts that I think you missed understood me. I don't have any problem with using others from with in the universal church to help out a local church in it's training. I am trying to point out that biblically it is our responsibility a churches to train and equip the saints for the work of the ministry. If we did that, we would not have to look outside of our own fellowships for our next pastor, he would have been trained from with in.

I like pretty much everything you say here. Would be an interesting world if the only Christian colleges outside the church offered any and all fields of study except for ministry.
Some of the posts in this thread have criticized Christian institutions that are not run by a local church, trying to say that any Christian organization/endeavor must be under the auspices of a local church (with the head honcho "man of God" as the ultimate authority of course). I think to say that every college must be set up that way is unScriptural and erroneous, which is where most of my "ire" about this comes from.
I especially like what you said about parents farming out their teaching responsibilities to "professionals." Go figure, I was homeschooled 4th thru 12th grade.
