If someone wants to get upset or offended about what we do they need to just be thankful that our movement is governed by local autonomy and not by a hierarchy. If you want to invite GV then fine, and if you don't that's your church. I will guarantee you this; Bro Eric would NEVER criticize a ministry for NOT having GV, while many would feel obliged to let him have it for having them.
Culturally irrelevant?
I spent 7.5 years at Foothill Baptist Church in Moreno Valley, CA in the 90's up til 2002.
Our music program was much like FBC Hammond with a little more Southern Gospel influence in the quartets and choir numbers.
However, the music we sang was not 'culturally relevant' for California.
We didn't sing choruses, or bring in famous bands.
Harvest Ministry and Calvary Chapel were right down the road, but we never tried to pattern our program to become like them.
Our numbers were huge back in those days.
I worked at Randy Tewell's church for 3 years and his church grew from 170 when I got there to 550 a week when I left in 05.
And I was the music director.
Again, no famous bands. We did have the Ball family and the Epley's, that's it.
Bro. Tewell's church now runs in the 750 range, and they haven't changed their music standards since I left.
Please don't tell me that you need to be culturally relevant or face extinction.
